Northwestern Mutual invites students to 'job shadow' data science department

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Northwestern Mutual opened the doors of its data lab to dozens of high school students Thursday, Nov. 21.

They were invited to job shadow people who work in the data science department.

The students came from seven high schools, most of them in the city of Milwaukee. It's a really unique opportunity for them, having a company say "we need you to learn how to do this."

"We've essentially put a stake in the ground and said Northwestern Mutual needs data science talent and it's not here. And so we're actually going to create this entity to be able to shape that," said Northwestern Mutual's Molly Schuld.

The goal was to show that data science is critical to the success of many companies. The students were given a specific task. They had to use sales data information, analysis and modeling to predict Culver's Frozen Custard's "Flavor of the Day."
