SHEBOYGAN, Wis. (CBS 58) — Several juveniles have been arrested in connection with a string of vehicle thefts and attempted thefts across Sheboygan County, and police say additional arrests are expected.

The Sheboygan Police Department said it has received numerous reports of stolen vehicles since Aug. 15, with thieves primarily targeting certain Hyundai and Kia models associated with a viral social media trend.

Police said 10 vehicle thefts and five attempted thefts have been reported in the city of Sheboygan. Some of the stolen vehicles were later involved in reckless driving incidents and hit-and-run crashes across the community.

Investigators collected surveillance video, physical evidence and witness statements from multiple crime scenes.

Members of the Sheboygan Police Department's Street Crimes Unit later took over the investigation and used that evidence to identify three juveniles from Sheboygan, according to police.

Authorities said the three juveniles were arrested and admitted involvement in some of the thefts. All three were referred to juvenile authorities in connection with four of the 15 reported cases.

A fourth Sheboygan juvenile was arrested Sunday morning after police said the juvenile was driving a vehicle that had been stolen from Plymouth. The arrest followed a brief pursuit.

Police said the investigation remains ongoing and additional arrests are expected.

Anyone with information about the vehicle thefts is asked to contact the Sheboygan Police Department.

Police are also encouraging owners of certain Kia and Hyundai vehicles manufactured between 2011 and 2022 to contact a local dealership about available anti-theft software updates and optional hardware.

Authorities said some vehicles from those model years can be vulnerable to theft even when the key is not inside the vehicle.
