RACINE, Wis. (CBS 58) -- The Racine Zoo has welcomed a new African penguin. The chick was born May 3, and according to zoo staff, has been doing great behind-the-scenes with its parents and the rest of the colony.

"Penguin breeding is always a little bit of a stressful time for animal care staff with only about 50% of eggs being fertile and being successful hatches," says Angie Sagert, Assistant Curator and Primary Penguin Keeper at the Racine Zoo, "but when everything works out and you end up with a happy, healthy chick, it is very rewarding. It has been so fun watching this chick grow up."

In 2015, the Racine Zoo added four new African penguins to their exhibit in hopes a larger, more robust colony would encourage breeding. The new chick -- whose gender has not been revealed -- will join older siblings Kobe, Nelson and Ozzy, who were all born at the Racine Zoo.

In the upcoming weeks, the zoo will host a gender reveal for the new penguin.
