Racine mayor touts housing success during Gov. Evers' visit

RACINE, Wis. (CBS 58) -- Governor Tony Evers made a stop in Racine Thursday, March 30, to tour a house under construction.

Racine Mayor Cory Mason not only showed the governor the house, he showed Evers how the city is working to get more people into homes of their own.

"More than 270 new homeowners in the last few years in the city of Racine that are getting the training and the resources that they need," Mayor Mason said.

How is that happening? The home Evers toured is being built with funding from the Covid-era American Rescue Plan Act.

Then, to get people who otherwise might not be able to afford a home into a house like this, Racine is using financial counselors as part of a program to boost savings and credit scores.

Alyssa Blake is working with a counselor to help her buy a place of her own.

"It's just been so knowledgeable and makes it, you know, more easier for me to just keep going forward, moving forward for me and my children," Blake said.

"A lot of need here, and Racine is really hittin' it out of the park. And I know the mayor will say we got a lot more to do, I understand that, but what a great start," said Evers.

The house that Gov. Evers toured Thursday is one of five that are being built in the neighborhood, and Mayor Mason says there are many more to come.
