'He is definitely not wild': Cudahy police reunite lost wallaby with owner, who's now fighting to keep him

CUDAHY, Wis. (CBS 58) -- Cudahy police took an interesting call Thursday morning, July 3 -- a wallaby on the loose.

They returned him to his owner, who's now fighting to keep him.

Cudahy police say FedEx employees on International Drive called them at 7 a.m. to report a kangaroo on the loose. It wasn't quite a kangaroo, but it was a wallaby, native to Australia and New Guinea.

Body camera video shows the moment Cudahy officers found the wallaby. They brought him back to the station and posted on social media, asking the owner to claim him.

His owner, Linda Rowster, picked him up a couple hours later. She tells us his name is August, and he's just shy of two years old.

Rowster says August is her family pet that she bought at Seven Mile Fair a year ago.

While he likes to spend time outside, he lives in her home, and this was his first time getting out. But while we were at Rowster's house meeting August, Cudahy police showed up with an order from the health department saying she can't keep him because he's a "wild animal."

Rowster disagrees.

"He is definitely not wild. I did not catch him out of force, I bought him from a breeder," Rowster said. "He has been with me ever since he was a baby. He has been raised with me and he's very domesticated."

The order says Rowster has five days to either surrender him to MADACC or find a new place for him to legally reside.

She says she did her research before purchasing him and didn't find anything saying she can't own a wallaby, especially because he's so friendly. She's going to do anything she can to keep August, so we'll check in next week.
