Racine house fire leaves family without home, daughter still recovering in hospital
CBS 58 RACINE, Wis. (CBS 58) - A fire in Racine early Tuesday morning, Feb. 3, left 10 people without a home, including a family whose daughter remains in the hospital. Relatives are helping the family, but the path forward is uncertain.
Just before 6 a.m. Tuesday, flames tore through a three-family home near Buchanan and Hamilton Streets. People were trapped on the second floor inside the home.
Among those inside were Sandra Aranda and her children. Sandra’s niece said her cousin, who remains in the hospital, helped save everyone.
“She was making sure all the other kids got out of the house before her,” she said.
The fire woke the family up quickly.
“She smelt it, she started yelling, that’s how they woke up. They were trying to breathe out of a window before they ended up breaking the front window,” she said.
One child panicked during the fire.
“One of my cousins was scared to the point where she ended up jumping out the window,” she said.
The fire displaced 10 people and left the home unlivable. The family lost everything and is now staying with other relatives.
“She told me she was upset they had just started over; they were finally getting back on their feet just for everything to be taken again,” she said.
The family has started an online fundraiser to help with clothes, furniture, and a place to stay which can be found here.
“One thing they’re not thinking about is where are they going to go or the things that they need because their mind right now is really focusing on their sister,” she said.
