GREENFIELD, Wis. (CBS 58) -- A piece of Wisconsin sports history will be restored to its past glory. The famed Underbird that Greenfield's Alan Kulwicki drove to a NASCAR title needs your help to make repairs. And to crew chief Paul Andrews, it's still emotional, with special meaning.
CBS 58 Sports Director Lance Allan asked, "What does the term Underbird mean to you, and what does the car mean to you?"
"When we went to Atlanta, for the final race, it's crazy how this still chokes me up after all these years," an emotional Paul Andrews, crew chief for Alan Kulwicki, says. "Thunderbird's always on the bottom of the nose, you know, at that time. We sometimes said Ford, but it's a different model, but...measuring things over the years. But in that era, the front of the car had 'Thunderbird.' And Chevrolets had their, you know, identity on there. So, took, we asked Ford if it was ok if we took T-H off and go, you know, go to the racetrack as the Underbird. And we put in the little Mighty Mouse insignia symbol on the front of it. See something that I don't think ever be done anymore in the sport of NASCAR. You know, even in the lower-tier series. I don't think it can be done. But not the way we did it back then. And that's a piece of history that we needed, that we need to take care of. And we, too, you know, it needs to be there. And you know, it won't be on display at the NASCAR Hall of Fame all the time. But it will be there. Especially that someone from Wisconsin can go and see that car. I think it will be, you know, very special."
