Program Aims to Introduce STEM to Young Girls

Milwaukee -

A local program involving GE and the Milwaukee School of Engineering addresses the large disparity in the number of women, versus men, who receive engineering and physics degrees.  The program, called GE Girls aims to fight against whatever causes girls to lose interest in math and science in middle school.

Recently, April Dovorany followed along with the program as 31 middle schoolers from Waukesha spent a week performing experiments that feature physics, math, chemistry, and electronics.  The experiments are designed to incorporate common interests for young girls like fashion and modern electronics.   The include tasks like putting a plastic model engine together, soldering circuitry and learning the chemical components needed to make lip gloss.  Throughout the week the students visited three locations: GE Power & Water, GE Healthcare and MSOE.
