OCONOMOWOC, Wis. (CBS 58) -- The City of Oconomowoc Police Department sent out a press release warning of the increase in scam calls that they and surrounding area police departments have been reported.
According to law enforcement, this has resulted in hundreds of thousands of dollars being taken from Lake Country residents.
Using 'spoofed' phone numbers is the most common way these frauds are being carried out. 'Spoofing' is where scammers manipulate ID systems, making it seem like the call is coming from a legit source as people will trust them easier. This could be a bank, government agency or a personal contact.
Oconomowoc police have highlighted the most common requests used:
- Demanding the use of a Bitcoin ATM.
- Ordering you to withdraw cash from the bank.
- Pressures you to send money to "save" a loved one from harm or arrest.
