The Bucks Draft Giannis (2013)
Former ESPN NBA Insider Adrian Wojinorowski details how a skinny teenager from Greece went from being an unknown player to a tantalizing prospect.
Rookie Year (2013-2014)
Giannis came into the league as the 15th overall pick in the 2013 NBA Draft. His physical tools wowed scouts throughout the draft process, and each time he stepped on the court, people got a glimpse of the potential he carried. Averaging 6.8 PPG, 4.4 RPG and 1.9 APG in 24.6 MPG, he was featured at All-Star weekend in the Rising Stars game and skills competition. He would finish seventh in Rookie of the Year voting.
Sophomore Season (2014-2015)
In his second year, Giannis Antetokounmpo was given a larger role by head coach Jason Kidd. Starting in 71 of his 81 games, he saw his scoring average nearly double to 12.7 PPG. All-Star weekend featured a brotherly connection with Thanasis during his Dunk Contest appearance. The Bucks finished 41-41 and earned a trip to the playoffs.
Year 3 (2015-2016)
Developing even further, he averaged nearly 17 PPG. The team would miss the playoffs, but the season was filled with key performances, including the team’s win against the Golden State Warriors, who were on a historic 24-game winning streak, and his first career triple-double, which doubled as Kobe Bryant’s final game in Milwaukee — Giannis’ favorite player growing up.
Year 4 (2016-2017)
While the Greek Freak improved each of his first three seasons in the league, the 2016-2017 campaign proved he was becoming a superstar in the NBA. Bumping his season stats to 22.9 PPG, 8.8 RPG and 5.4 APG, Giannis was named the Most Improved Player in the league after earning his first All-Star appearance. He also was named to the All-NBA Second Team and All-Defensive Second Team while finishing 7th in MVP voting. Season Highlights

Most Valuable Player (2018-2019)
Antetokounmpo would end the 2018-2019 season by taking home the MVP trophy for the first time in his career. His 27.7/12.5/5.9/1.3/1.6 stat line proved best in class, with his offensive and defensive prowess solidifying himself as the best player in the NBA. Giannis and the Bucks showed signs of being a title contender, beating Detroit and Boston in the first and second rounds of the playoffs before losing in six games to Toronto. Highlights
Back-to-Back (2019-2020)
Building upon his first MVP campaign, Giannis backed it up by increasing his PPG and RPG while taking home yet another MVP trophy — adding a Defensive Player of the Year trophy to his growing NBA hardware collection. In the postseason, the Bucks would flame out in the second round to the Miami Heat, with Giannis spraining his ankle in Game 3 and missing a portion of Game 4 and all of Game 5. While accepting the MVP trophy, he told the world not to call him an MVP until he brought home an NBA title.
Climbing the Mountain Top (2020-2021)
Committing to the Bucks long-term by signing a five-year, $228 million extension in December, the largest in league history, Giannis and the Milwaukee Bucks would go to achieve the ultimate goal — winning an NBA championship. Ending a 50-year drought for the franchise and cementing his legacy as one of the greatest players to ever play in the NBA. He’s currently one of nine players to ever win two MVPs and an NBA championship.
Outscoring Cap (2021-2022)
While there would be no MVP or NBA Title to claim at the end of the season, Giannis would finish the year third in MVP voting, adding more All-Star, All-NBA First Team and All-Defense First Team selections to his resume. On top of that, he surpassed Kareem Abdul-Jabbar for the most points in franchise history. He would also become the third player in NBA playoff history to post a 40/20/5 game in Game 6 of the second round against the Boston Celtics.
Adding to the History Books (2022-2023)
The Greek Freak would accomplish rarities throughout the regular season. He became the fifth player in NBA history to score 44 points in less than 28 minutes, he became the franchise leader in free throws. He also became the first player with at least 200 points, 80 rebounds and 30 assists over five games since Kareem Abdul-Jabbar in 1972.
Year 11 (2023-2024)
Early in his eleventh season, Giannis passed yet another milestone. During a 54-point scoring outburst, he became the youngest player with at least 16,000 points, 7,000 and 3,000 assists in an NBA career. On Dec. 13, 2023, Milwaukee’s #34 reached a career-high and franchise-record 64 points in a single game — along with 14 rebounds — in a victory over the Indiana Pacers. A calf injury in April would sideline him for the remainder of the regular season and the playoffs.
Year 12 (2024-2025)
This season was highlighted by the Milwaukee Bucks winning the NBA Cup in December, with Antetokounmpo receiving the tournament MVP award. He had 26 points, 19 rebounds and 10 assists in the final game. Later in March, Giannis would cross the 20,000 mark for career points. The Bucks were eliminated in the playoffs by the Indiana Pacers despite Giannis averaging playoff career-highs in points, rebounds and field goal percentage.
Year 13 (2025-2026)
In his final year with the Milwaukee Bucks, injuries in the second half of the season would allow him to play only 36 games, the lowest in his career. He would miss out on All-NBA selections for the first time in nine years, but still earned an All-Star nod thanks to his production in the first half of the year.
