DOUSMAN, Wis. (CBS 58) -- Nearly one dozen animals died in a fire in the Village of Dousman on Saturday, June 13.

According to the Western Lakes Fire District, around 2 p.m., neighbors reported seeing smoke coming from a home on Wolf Drive and the sound of dogs barking inside.

The neighbors, according to fire officials, attempted to get inside the home to rescue the animals but severity of the smoke and fire prevented them from doing so.

Fire and police personnel from more than a dozen departments responded to the scene.

Officials say the incident escalated into a mass casualty scenario involving the animals inside the home.

Of the 16 dogs and 16 cats removed from the residence, crews were only able to resuscitate six dogs and five cats.

"Our deepest sympathies go out to the families impacted by this tragic fire and the profound loss of these beloved family members," said Western Lakes Fire District Chief Bradley Bowen. "As a community, this incident hits hard. Our first responders faced a significant and tragic scene, and we are utilizing our Employee Assistance Program and Peer Support Team to support the mental wellbeing of the personnel involved."

The homeowners were not home at the time of the fire.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but officials do not believe it is suspicious in nature.
