MILWAUKEE, (CBS 58) -- More than 1,000 people came together Sunday morning to raise money to fight cancer.

Today marked the 2nd Annual Audaxity Bike Ride at American family field.

The event brings cancer survivors, caretakers, and community members together to raise funds for cancer research at the Medical College of Wisconsin Cancer Center.

Mary Horowitz, the Deputy Cancer Center Director with the Medical College of Wisconsin, says the funds raised through this event are critical for new ideas to be developed into therapies that can cure cancer.

"I have a sister who has a cancer where there is no cure and I don't want anyone to have to hear that they have a diagnosis that can't be helped," said Horowitz.

It's a cause that's personal for her.

"I've actually had cancer two times," said Horowitz. "When I was 49, I had breast cancer and when I was 64, I had a throat cancer. The reason I'm here standing here talking to you today is because of decades of research that made those cancers curable."

Last year the event raised more than $1 million, and this year their goal is for the event to double that amount.
