MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- As Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS) nears the end of their school year, local leaders are celebrating improved attendance in the classroom.

Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson and MPS Superintendent Dr. Brenda Cassellius are marking the first year of the "Kids Cabinet" partnership.
Throughout the inaugural year of the program, MPS saw improved student attendance, parent engagement, and more than 100 city employees mentoring students across nine MPS schools.
"Our partnership this year and the efforts don't always make headlines, but it shows up in the place that matter, it shows up in attendance it shows up in literacy, it shows up in students who share that we believe in them, and more importantly, their future," said Mayor Johnson.
The celebration also highlighted progress in Milwaukee's lead remediation efforts and the city's "Hello Summer" initiative -- which connects young people with the city's resources during summer break.
