More Milwaukee Mumps...What You Need to Know

(Milwaukee)--Health experts admit they’re worried over the hundreds of recent mumps cases nationwide, including seven in Milwaukee. And while many of these are college students, the general public isn’t immune.

The contagious virus typically starts with a fever and overall body aches in addition to a loss of appetite. The swelling of the salivary glands follows.

If you were born in 1957 or before, chances are you have natural immunity to the mumps virus. But if you’re younger, or have any doubt you had the series of shots, doctors say there’s no danger in getting re-immunized. And if you want to look at your immunization records, you should contact the health department from the state you were born.
