MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- A hometown war hero was recognized once again Thursday, July 10, in Milwaukee.
Captain Lance Sijan from Bay View, an air force pilot who was shot down during the Vietnam War and endured torture and eventually died in Hanoi Prison.
A military jet flyover was part of today's ceremony at Mitchell International Airport, as the Lance Sijan Memorial Plaza was rededicated.
The plaza features an F-4 Phantom jet similar to the plane Captain Sijan flew. It needed some repairs and restoration.
Captain Sijan's sister, Janine, spoke at the ceremony about her brother's resilience and the inspiration others can take from his life.
"Shine your light. Shine the collaborative light that you feel inspired from him and each other," said Janine Sajin. "And whether you are a candle wick or a stadium light, you make a difference just by being here. Just by being here, with your light."
You can visit the Lance Sijan Memorial Plaza located at 5500 S. Howell Ave.
