Milwaukee leaders urge residents to get flu, COVID-19 vaccines as respiratory illness season begins
CBS 58 MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) — With respiratory illness season underway, Milwaukee leaders are encouraging residents to take steps to protect themselves and their families.
Mayor Cavalier Johnson joined local health officials Thursday to emphasize the importance of staying up to date on flu and COVID-19 vaccinations.
Officials said vaccination rates remain low and increasing them will be an important part of limiting severe illness and hospitalizations in the community this season.
"During the 2024-2025 flu season, when vaccination rates were similarly at a low level, we saw over 7,000 people hospitalized from the flu," Milwaukee County Chief Health Policy Advisor Dr. Ben Weston said. "While none of us can eliminate the risks, we can take steps to prevent serious illness and protect the people around us."
Health officials stressed that vaccination is particularly important for people who are at higher risk of developing serious complications from respiratory illnesses.
Following the remarks, Johnson and other local leaders rolled up their sleeves and received their annual flu vaccinations as part of the effort to encourage Milwaukee-area residents to do the same.
