Milwaukee father, mother charged in connection with fatal shooting of 4-year-old

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- A 35-year-old Milwaukee man is accused of fatally shooting his 4-year-old son, and the child's 33-year-old mother is facing criminal charges in connection.
The shooting happened the night of July 10, in a third-floor bedroom of a residence near 75th and Northridge Lakes Boulevard, near the Glenbrook Apartment Homes.
According to a criminal complaint, Ralph Taylor has a long history of domestic violence against Casandra Taylor, the mother of the 4-year-old victim. The victim's 9-year-old sibling told investigators, per the complaint, when Ralph drinks alcohol he becomes physically and verbally abusive. The complaint says Ralph would slap the 9-year-old child and use profane language around them. Taylor also allegedly threated to shoot Casandra, shoot up the entire house, and to kill himself.
On July 10, Ralph allegedly woke up "wanting to fight" the 9-year-old, accusing them of taking a PS4 videogame system. During the day, Ralph was reportedly fighting with Casandra and broke her Chromebook. After breaking the tablet, the complaint says Ralph went to the living room, grabbed his 4-year-old child by the arm and took him to an upstairs bedroom. Ralph was reportedly in the upstairs bedroom with the 4-year-old for one to two minutes before a single gunshot rang out.
Casandra and the 9-year-old child rushed to the bedroom, according to the complaint, and once they got inside they found the 4-year-old child in a pool of blood on the floor.
Two neighbors told investigators they witnessed Casandra run out of the residence screaming, "my son, my son, somebody shot my son!"
Ralph's reaction to the shooting, according to the 9-year-old's account, demonstrated he did not care, and did not attempt to render aid to the 4-year-old.
Authorities interviewed Casandra's 23-year-old niece, who officials say had been living with Ralph and Casandra for the past month. Prior to the shooting, Casandra's niece stated she witnessed Ralph enter the living room, grab the 4-year-old child and told Casandra, "He's with me. I am not letting him go. He's my kid." He then took the child up to the upstairs bedroom where the shooting occurred. She also told investigators Ralph threatened to shoot everyone in the house and said, "you gonna see."
Both Ralph and Casandra were taken into custody following the shooting. But not before investigators say Casandra hid the gun in a purse and gave it to a neighbor.
Authorities interviewed Ralph on July 11, where officials say he initially said the child was shot through the window as he was lying on the bed, arguing with Casandra via text. However, when confronted with physical evidence that the child had been shot in the mouth, Ralph later changed his story to say the child found a gun underneath pillows on the bed and shot himself.
According to the complaint, investigators asked Ralph what he and Casandra were fighting about. He stated it was over his lack of taking care of their 4-year-old. Casandra reportedly told Ralph he doesn't watch or care for the child properly, to which Ralph responded with, "well, [expletive] it. He can just come upstairs with me."
After the shooting, Ralph claimed he put the gun underneath the pillows because he's a felon, and stated he later told a neighbor, "I can't let the police find the guns because I'm a felon."
Casandra was also interviewed by investigators on July 11, where she admitted she is in possession of two guns, one she keeps in her purse and second that Ralph took from her and would not give back. Casandra admitted there are text messages from Ralph asking her to purchase a gun for him; he'd send pictures of firearms he wanted Casandra to buy for him. Ralph allegedly had possession of one of the guns since the family moved into the residence.
Cassandra reportedly admitted knowing Ralph was a convicted felon, stating "Yes, I know, and I know I am going to get in trouble for that." She also told authorities Ralph has threatened her in the past to "suicide it out with me and the police." When asked about giving her purse to a neighbor, with a gun inside following the shooting, Casandra explained she thought she would have to go to the morgue, so she left her purse -- and gun -- with a neighbor.
Ralph Taylor has been charged with first-degree intentional homicide, use of a dangerous weapon, and possession of a firearm by a felon. Casandra Taylor has been charged with neglecting a child, consequence is death, and the straw purchase of a firearm.
Both are due in court for initial appearances Monday, July 14.
