MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- First-year students at Milwaukee's Institute of Art and Design moved in to their residence hall on Wednesday.
The beginning of the school year marks an enrollment record for MIAD. The school says more than 850 people will attend in 2019. The new first-year class has more than 330 people.
"I decided to come here because art has always been a very big dream of mine and it's great that I now get to pursue that passion of mine," First-year student Savannah Hudson said.
Half of the school's students come from out of state, including Hudson. Hudson and her mom drove to Milwaukee from their home in Mobile, Alabama.
"She's my firstborn, first to graduate and she's my only daughter," Hudson's mom Elizabeth Gorlott said. "It's hard being so far away, 15 hours, but I will do anything to help her pursue that dream."
Hudson is majoring in illustration. Classes at MIAD begin on Monday.
