Manatees off Endangered Species List

Manatees are no longer on the endangered species list.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has upgraded the status of manatees from "endangered" to "threatened."

That means manatees are no longer in danger of extinction, but their numbers are still low enough they should be protected.

In the 1970's, there were only a few hundred of them left. Now their population is up to around 660.
