Local Mexican restaurants prepare for Cinco de Mayo rush
PORT WASHINGTON, Wis. (CBS 58) -- Cinco de Mayo is an annual celebration in one Mexican city that has become very popular here in the U.S., and some hometown restaurants are prepping for big crowds on Friday.
"We serve nothing but authentic Mexican food," Owner of Tello's Grille & Cafe Angel Tello said.
For 17 years, Tello has used fresh ingredients to share his Mexican heritage through his cooking.
"We take a lot of pride in serving our food," he said.
A huge day for Tello, and many other Mexican restaurants, is coming up.
"Cinco de Mayo here in Port Washington is a little fiesta. So please come and join us," Tello said.
Even though Cinco de Mayo is about one Mexican city's battle against France in 1862, which is not celebrated in all of Mexico, Tello tells CBS 58, it is still an opportunity to uplift his native country.
"I am a fifth generation in this industry. We take a lot of pride in sharing our culture with our community. Our Guests come from all over the world sometimes because Port Washington is a destination," he said.
Tello will have food specials to mark Cinco de Mayo, and he is not the only place expecting to make a lot of margaritas. Just down the road at Beanie's Mexican Restaurant and Cantina, patrons can spin a wheel for prizes if they order select drinks on Friday.
"There are free t-shirts, you get to pick from the party box, a free beer, a free shot. All those different types of things," Beanie's General Manager Madeline Binsfeld said.
Along with the wheel, there will be raffles you can enter when you stop by, or you can still pre-order a to-go taco box from the restaurant if you prefer to stay in and celebrate.
"It's like build-your-own tacos that you can take to your house if you want to fiesta with us at home," Binsfeld said. "We say it feeds a hungry family of four. It's perfect for a small little party, or you can order two."
Both restaurants say Cinco de Mayo is an excellent way to kick off summer, on top of the fact that it gives people a reason to dine at local Mexican restaurants.
