Local art show benefiting university students ending after over 50 years

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- After 53 years of raisings money for student scholarships and campus projects with student art, Mount Mary University has announced that their Starving Artists' Show has been cancelled.

The 2022 event had already been set aside due to poor weather after Labor Day, so this announcement reflects any future shows; the program has now officially being sunset.

A statement was issued by MMU on Thursday, Sept. 29 to attribute the cancellation to " ... rising costs of services and increased demands of time and talent from volunteers and staff." The university also noted that the Alumnae Association has been notified, as it spearheaded the event since its inception in 1968.

Moria Flood, Director of Alumni Relations said in the statement that the decision was made with careful consideration, weighing the many factors that allow the event to take place each year. She said that the announcement was made with a heavy heart.

The show featured local and national artists working in a variety of artforms, raising money for the university by selling all artwork at budget-friendly prices, under $125 a piece.

Mount Mary President Isabelle Cherney, Ph.D. said alongside the announcement that the Starving Artists' Show shined " ... a light on the immense talent and dedication of artisans from across the country, welcomed countless community members to the beautiful Mount Mary campus," and added that the financial support it provided MMU's students was substantial.

Many of the works of art featured at the Starving Artists' Show in past years can be found by visiting the show's Instagram account.
