Late Brewers rally falls short against Royals

The Brewers scored three runs in the ninth inning Monday night, but still fell short 8-5 against the Kansas City Royals in the opener of a four game series.

Martin Maldonado and Jonathan Lucroy each drove in runs with base hits in the final frame, giving Lucroy three runs driven in on the night. But the Brewers had dug themselves too deep a hole, falling behind 5-0 after four and a half innings. Former Brewer Lorenzo Cain homered for the Royals, and former Brewers shortstop Alcides Escobar scored a run and drove in two.

The Brewers offense had gone 20 consecutive innings without scoring before Lucroy broke that drought in the fifth.
