Historic Third Ward welcomes 'Rusty the Mastodon' after public naming contest
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- A mammoth sculpture in Milwaukee's Historic Third Ward has officially been named after a public contest.
The sculpture is now named Rusty the Mastodon, according to a Wednesday, July 26 press release from the Historic Third Ward Association. The work of art is a brainchild of local developer Kendall Breunig, and stands prominently across from The Pritzlaff building at 150 W. St. Paul Ave.
On Friday, July 21, the statue was unveiled on Gallery Night MKE. The mammoth replica, weighing over 22,000 pounds and constructed from steel, is the product of a repurposed boiler originally from the former Nunn-Bush Shoe Company Factory.
Unusual features of the mastodon include 10-feet long hammer-tapered tusks, 1929 Ford Model A headlights for eyes and a rocky foundation.
The naming contest took place via Instagram. Each of the seven contest participants who suggested the winning name of Rusty are receiving a $100 gift card to Explorium Brewpub-Third Ward or the Milwaukee Public Market.
