MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Shovels were in the ground near 6th and Washington on Friday. That groundbreaking marks the start of construction for a technology-oriented school.
Milwaukee's United Community Center is building a new home for its Acosta Middle School which just opened last year. There's an emphasis on hard work, high expectations, parent involvement, and the kind of training students will need to get jobs in the future.
"There's a gap really, you talk to every employer and they're all looking for jobs whether they're Hispanic or otherwise. And we think that we could make a positive contribution to that. We can't leave anybody on the sidelines these days," said Ricardo Diaz, Executive Director of the United Community Center.
"I get phone calls all the day, every day, not people looking for work but people looking for employees and this is exactly what we're doing," said Ald. Jose Perez.
The new Acosta Middle School is scheduled to open in the fall of next year.
