Evers urges rejection of Trump budget cuts to preparedness, clean water, infrastructure

MADISON, Wis. (CBS 58) -- Gov. Tony Evers urged Wisconsin’s congressional delegation to oppose President Donald Trump’s 2026 budget in a letter sent Tuesday, Sept. 2.
Evers said the plan would cut FEMA preparedness grants and add local match requirements, reduce Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency support and shrink EPA State Revolving Funds.
The letter also says ending FEMA’s Building Resilient Infrastructure and Communities program would halt mitigation projects and reduce hazard mapping and coastal planning. Evers cited proposed cuts to Superfund cleanup, wildlife and forestry programs and transfers affecting National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure dollars and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration safety funding.
He wrote that, combined with the Republican-backed "Big Beautiful Bill," the changes would raise state costs and reduce coverage for some residents.
