Conor Fisk's comeback leads home to DockHounds
BROWN DEER, Wis. (CBS 58) -- Baseball can be a cruel sport. After sitting out the 2020 season during the pandemic, Brown Deer’s Conor Fisk was ready to make his triumphant return with the Rockies triple A affiliate. He got injured in the first inning. Tommy-John surgery. Another two seasons gone.
"It's a big blow, but it definitely was a blessing in disguise for me. Most people don’t get a restart button in life and for me it was to be able to hit the reset button and rebuild myself physically and emotionally."
After a ton of hard work, Conor is back. Pitching for the Lake Country DockHounds, 45 minutes from his hometown.
"Tommy John is one of the hardest things to go through and there's no guarantee that you'll ever be the same or even throw again afterwards. You know going through it made me stronger. To be able to be home and do it in front of my friends and family and everybody else helps a lot."
As fate would have it, the 31-year-old righty is working with one of his earliest managers at the DockHounds. During his six seasons in the Blue Jays organization, Ken Huckaby watched Conor grow.
"Believe it or not he's still the same guy, he's just smarter now than he used to be and that comes with experience. I knew he was going to be a leader the second I got here," said Huckaby.
"Definitely having a familiar face that I played with helps, especially not playing for three years it gives me a little familiarity to this game," said Fisk.
With a fastball topping out in the mid 90s the goal is to get back to affiliated baseball. But given the last three years, just being back on any mound, pitching at home for the DockHounds, Conor has already won.
