Teen dead following crash near 5th and Keefe, MPD says driver was traveling at high speeds

UPDATED: 1:41 p.m. on June 30, 2023:

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Milwaukee police are investigating a fatal crash near 5th and Keefe, where a 23-year-old Milwaukee driver lost control of the vehicle and struck a tree.

The crash reportedly resulted in the death of a 17-year-old Milwaukee girl -- identified by the Milwaukee County medical examiner as Zariyah Williams. Police say she was ejected during the collision, which occurred Friday, June 30 around 5:07 a.m.

MPD says the driver initially fled the scene but later returned and was placed in custody. He and three other passengers were taken to a local hospital for treatment, while a fifth passenger was treated at the scene.

Police say the driver was traveling at a high speed at the time of the collision. Charges are expected to be submitted to the Milwaukee County Attorney's Office for review.

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- One person is dead following an early morning crash on Milwaukee's north side near 5th and Keefe.

CBS 58's crew at the scene reports that the vehicle appears to have hit a tree before catching on fire.

The Milwaukee County Medical Examiner's Office tells CBS 58 that they were called to the scene, and also confirmed the death of one person.
