Zoo-pendous spring fundraiser bolstering Racine Zoo's animal care

RACINE, Wis. (CBS 58) -- The Racine Zoo invites the community to participate in their spring fundraiser, All in for the Animals, taking place from April 3 - 7.

With the support of the Ruud Family Foundation, each donation up to $5,000 will be matched, doubling the impact of each contribution.

The Racine Zoo's Animal Care Department is responsible for the daily and specialized care of over 400 animals across 75 unique species. As an Association of Zoos and Aquariums-accredited nonprofit, the zoo noted in a Friday, March 31 press release that maintaining a particularly high standard of animal care comes at a significant cost.

Among the animals benefiting from specialized care are Stevie the African penguin, eastern black rhinos Timu and Kianga, Stella the porcupine and Miranda the umbrella cockatoo.

Stevie recently underwent a procedure to remove nesting material from his stomach, while Timu and Kianga receive special foot care and custom ergonomic flooring. Stella, the prehensile-tailed porcupine and a Racine Zoo ambassador, has been meticulously trained and given her very own 3D-printed tree stand.

Meanwhile, Miranda the umbrella cockatoo enjoys voluntary nail trims and beak maintenance, along with daily enrichment activities, including singing along to musicals on his tablet.

Donations are accepted online by clicking here, but mail-in donations are also accepted by mailing a donation check to the Racine Zoo at 200 Goold Street in Racine, 53402.
