Woman questioned after Explosion in a Chicago Target Store

CHICAGO (CBS CHICAGO) — A 44-year-old woman has been taken into custody in connection to a small explosion in the women’s restroom of a Target store in Evanston.

Evanston Police Cmdr. Joe Dugan said the woman was being questioned about the explosion of a plastic bottle inside the Target at 2209 Howard St. Charges were expected sometime Thursday.

Investigators have not yet determined the motive for the blast, but Dugan said there’s no evidence it had anything to do with Target’s policy on allowing transgender customers and staff to use the restroom of their choice.

“There’s nothing at this point that indicates that it’s anything related to any policies or anything that the Target store has in place,” Dugan said.

Police said the woman in custody was picked up based on video evidence and information from witnesses.

No one was injured in the explosion, and the store remained open afterward. Investigators have not said what was inside the bottle.

Police said they’re not looking for any other suspects.
