Witnesses: Son stabs mother as she cries, 'I love you'

Phoenix, AZ (KPHO) -- A mother's cries that she loved her 18-year-old son wasn't enough to prevent him from stabbing and beating her Tuesday, witnesses said.

Cory Kit Montgomery is suspected of stabbing his mother, Darla, nine times with a kitchen knife at their Phoenix home in the area of 34th Street and McDowell Road.

Cory Montgomery told police that God told him to stab his mother, according to a Phoenix police statement.

Witnesses said they heard Darla Montgomery scream that she was his mother and that she loved him before he began stabbing her. One witness said Cory Montgomery stood over his mother after the stabbing and repeatedly punched her.

Darla Montgomery was taken to Maricopa Medical Center, was treated for her wounds and was admitted for further treatment and evaluation, according to the statement.

Officers caught Cory Montgomery as he was being chased by witnesses to the stabbing, according to the statement.

He was questioned and later jailed on one count of felony attempted second-degree murder and a felony count of resisting arrest.

He was being held on $500,000 bond.
