What is Common Core?

MILWAUKEE--Governor Scott Walker is now calling for the state of Wisconsin to go its way when it comes to education our children.

Governor Walker is now asking state lawmakers to repeal a set of widely accepted federal academic standards known as Common Core. A bit of a surprise move in an election year for the governor, especially given a similar proposal stalled in the legislature earlier this year without the governor's support.

Common Core is a K-12 academic standard. The subjects include Mathematics and English Language Arts. More than 40 states state initially signed up for the new standard. It was established under the Obama administration back in 2009. The standard was suppose to go into affect for the 2014-2015 school year.

\"Standards aren't new. What's new is this, a few folks took an interest in designing standards for the nation,\" said Amy Mizialko with the Milwaukee Teachers' Education Association.
