WAUWATOSA, Wis. (CBS 58) – Cranky Al’s Bakery in Wauwatosa is selling a doughnut that closely resembles Tide Pod laundry detergent packs.
The creation is in response to a dangerous internet trend where young adults take a video eating the laundry detergent and post it online.
A manager says the message they want to get across is to eat the doughnuts instead of the laundry detergent.
“When you hear stuff like that you’re not proud to see it,” Cranky Al’s managing partner Joey Carioti said. “You’re not proud to see people eating Tide Pods but we’re happy that we can put our spin on it and get them away from it and eat a doughnut instead.”
The bakery came up with the idea for the raspberry-filled doughnut around two weeks ago after seeing other bakeries around the country creating their own treats. Cranky Al’s has been selling around 36 of the doughnuts every day. On Saturdays and Sundays, they sell close to 50.
Although the treat has been popular in the area, some think bringing more attention to the challenge isn’t a good idea.
“Bringing light of it in restaurants I think is untoward, I don’t know why a restaurant would want to do that,” Milwaukee resident John Hammetter said.
Cranky Al’s plans on selling the doughnuts until Valentine’s Day.
