UW-Milwaukee students protest ongoing ICE operations in Minneapolis

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- UW-Milwaukee students hit the streets Tuesday, to protest the ongoing immigration operation that's playing out in Minneapolis.

Their message is similar to what we've been hearing a lot over the last few weeks -- stay prepared.

It was a similar story last night during a town hall on the east side. During that meeting, MPD officials addressed how they would operate if or when ICE is deployed into Milwaukee.

"We are there to make sure that people have their constitutional rights to free speech," said Heather Hough, MPD chief of staff. "But we also, as an agency, cannot obstruct another agency from their work."

"I think that is just further complicity," said Chris Van Valkenberg, chair of Students for a Democratic Society. "I think we've seen what's happening in Minneapolis, we've seen their administration, their local government that's standing firm against the ICE presence in their city."

The reactions here in Milwaukee come after the shooting deaths of Renee Good and Alex Pretti, who were both killed by federal agents last month in Minneapolis.
