Transgender Kenosha Teenager gets Approval to run for Prom King after Protests

A transgender Kenosha teenager gets the green light to run for Prom King. Administrators made the decision after students from Tremper High School staged protests and created an online petition.

16-year-old Ashton Whitaker who was born a female but now identifies as male signed up to run for Prom Court, but was initially told by school administrators that he would have to run as Queen instead of King.

In a statement to CBS 58, a spokesperson for the Kenosha Unified School District said:

“The district has decided that in the best interest of all students, and to ensure we are maintaining what we have done historically at Tremper, any student who qualifies for Prom Court will be listed on the ballot under the gender with which they identify whether it be male or female."
