'Tour De Skull': Holy Hill Skeletons display returns for 24th year, featuring 135 bike-riding skeletons

HUBERTUS, Wis. (CBS 58) -- The Holy Hill Skeletons are back for another spooky season.

Jimmy Zamzow has been producing the attraction on his property for 24 years.

It all started with a skeleton on a lawnmower. Since then, his displays have grown exponentially, with a different theme taking the stage each year.

Past spectacles like "Dancing with the Skulls" and "Halloween Festiskull" gave way to this year's theme: "Tour De Skull."

It's a scene composed of at least 135 skeletons on bicycles -- a number in flux, as the display is always evolving.

The only requirements? No politics and no gore. Just "cute, funny" themes, Jimmy says, noting the wide variety of people from all over the world who stop to catch a glimpse of the display while in route to Holy Hill Basilica.

As you walk through the scene, you'll spot a Donald Driver skeleton, John Cusack's character from "Better Off Dead," and most noticeably, a giant skeleton ("Jethro Bonedeen") on a penny-farthing bicycle Jimmy built himself.

He's a carpenter by trade and says one of the coolest things about the yearly project is getting the opportunity to build things he'd never otherwise create.

"Tour De Skull" took nearly three weeks to assemble, and there's likely more to come. Jimmy says he hopes to add markers so guests can write names on the bibs of skeleton bicyclists. He also wants to allow guests to vote for their favorite. The most popular will be awarded the Tour de France yellow winner's jersey.

There's no fee to view the skeleton bike race, but if you visit, you'll find a tip box where you can leave a contribution toward next year's display. This year, Jimmy says he purchased 30 new skeletons, picking up secondhand helmets and borrowing bicycles from American Metal Salvage in West Bend.

While the decor is all in good fun, Jimmy says one thing he does want to promote is the importance of organ donation. "None of these skeletons have organs," he said. "And we're all going to end up skeletons."

The display will stay up until a week after Halloween. You can find it on Highway 167 in Hubertus.

As for next year's theme? Jimmy says it's a secret, but he's got a couple of ideas. You'll just have to wait and see.
