WEST MILWAUKEE, Wis. (CBS 58) -- The family of a 22-month-old boy who died last week from significant head trauma held a food sale fundraiser Saturday, June 6 in West Milwaukee to help with funeral costs and honor his memory.

Dozens of friends and family gathered in the afternoon at the Village of West Milwaukee Community Center to support Joriel “Jori” Ramirez-Rodriguez.

“I would sacrifice anything to have him back. I’d go to the ends of the world to see him again,” Jori’s father, Jorge Ramirez, said at the event.

Ramirez said the fundraiser gave loved ones a chance to come together and remember his son.

“I really appreciate everybody that came through. I wish he could have seen it,” he said.

“He was just the greatest; he was my superhero, my hero,” Ramirez added.

According to Racine police, Jori died last week after suffering significant head trauma. Investigators said 28-year-old Jordan Keith has been charged with first-degree reckless homicide in connection with the child’s death.

Ramirez said Keith was alone with Jori and his brother for about 20 to 30 minutes - the only window investigators believe the injury could have occurred.

“Something to take away from the situation is to take care of your kid. Why would you leave your kid in front of some guy you didn’t know when he had a biological father,” Ramirez said.

Investigators said Jori’s injuries included a brain bleed, brain swelling and bruising consistent with physical abuse.

The boy was first taken to a Racine hospital before being airlifted to Children’s Wisconsin, where he later died.

Ramirez said even with an arrest, it does not ease the pain of losing his son.

“It’s not going to change that my son passed away. They can arrest his mom too but it’s not going to do anything they’ll eventually get out of jail. I won’t get my son back. They robbed me of every opportunity I had to experience my son’s life,” he said.

“Let it be known that I want justice for my son,” Ramirez added.
