'Too many people are getting hit': Three traffic deaths in less than two weeks on Teutonia Avenue
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) — A 32-year-old motorcyclist died Wednesday night after being struck by an SUV near North Teutonia Avenue and West Finn Place, according to Milwaukee police.
Friends identified the victim as Edwin Rodrigues, who later died at a hospital.
The crash happened just one block from where two women were struck and killed while crossing Teutonia Avenue near North 20th Street on Sunday, July 12.
“Teutonia is a very dangerous strip all the way down from Burleigh to Capitol,” Milwaukee resident Jamaica said. “It’s like NASCAR’s coming through here.”
The Milwaukee Department of Public Works has no traffic-calming projects planned for that stretch of Teutonia Avenue.
“The mayor and all them, excuse my French, need to get off they a**, and do something because too many people are getting hit on motorcycles, too many pedestrians trying to cross the street are getting hit,” Jamaica said.
The Milwaukee mayor's office sent CBS 58 a statement Thursday about ongoing efforts to curb reckless driving.
“The City of Milwaukee has deployed traffic calming measures throughout the city, and, combined with enforcement and education, we can point to some positive traffic safety results. That is no solace to the families of those who have been killed in traffic crashes in our city. There is no letup in the city’s continuing work to eliminate traffic deaths here,” the statement said.
After three deaths in less than two weeks, neighbors said they want to see additional safety improvements.
“I think they just need speed bumps. They need speed bumps. This one long block, they need about four speed bumps, spread them out,” Milwaukee resident Schanelle Garder said.
