MILWAUKEE COUNTY, Wis. (CBS 58) -- Thousands of people who were impacted by last month's historic flooding continue to clean up the mess left behind. Many of them are still without a permanent place to stay while they rebuild their homes.

“It's been very nomadic, living in different places pretty much every night," said Joe Zidanic, whose home was destroyed from the flood in Wauwatosa.

One month after Zidanic's basement and home flooded with water, he's still trying to grasp his new reality.

"Tiring, because you’re planning for your, you know, day-to-day, where you’re going to stay, and then hopefully that irons out soon."

Losing almost everything he owns in the aftermath, Zidanic has been taking life day by day, slowly trying to rebuild his home, all on top of work and his daily responsibilities.

"Working on the house one day at a time with volunteers, friends, contractors, and we’re getting there.”

Living in the home since 2003, he says it's been heartbreaking to walk through and see it gutted.

"A lot of family pictures and memories that were destroyed because of all the water,” said Zidanic.

He, like many others in the neighborhood, are waiting to see if FEMA will be able to step in and provide aid.

"Things are in the works, but I guess we will never know," said Zidanic. "I guess we’re just waiting to see as well.”

With a long road ahead, he's trying to find some sense of normalcy, and doing what he can to fix what he lost.

"You know, a lot of progress has been made, I think, for all these houses, but there's still a long way to go," said Zidanic.
