Students show off vocabulary through rap at Bucks-hosted 'Rhymes with Reason' open mic
CBS 58 MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Rap turned educational this school year at St. Augustine Prep in Milwaukee.
"Rhymes with Reason" is a program that builds kids' vocabulary and literacy using lyrics in popular rap songs.
Now that it's the end of the school year, the hard work of these students was celebrated with an open mic.
The Milwaukee Bucks help support the program, so Bango made an appearance to cheer on students during their "rap-up."
The founder tells us the program is showing real results.
"Not only are they expressing themselves creatively, and that's great to see just from like a qualitative standpoint, but quantitatively, we've seen scores increase in relation to students using thymes with reason," founder and CEO Austin Martin said.
Martin says this shows how important it is to support arts in schools, since creative expression helps students find their voice and grow confidence.
