South Shore Park rehabilitation project hits final phase with opening date on the horizon
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Construction crews are making progress at Milwaukee's South Shore Park, as they're moving the beach and replacing the playground. It's just one of the many things getting a much-needed upgrade at the park.
Milwaukee County 4th District Supervisor Jack Eckblad says the last phase of the South Shore rehabilitation project is on track to be completed this summer.
Plans have been in the works since the early 2000s, and construction started just two months ago.
The beach is being moved south from the marinas to improve water circulation and quality for swimmers.
Right now, it's still very much a construction zone with piled sand and mud; crews are reminding visitors not to go down there until their work is done.
Next door, the playground is being replaced with a new one.
"This playground was loved to death, and now we're going to get brand new ground cover, brand new playground equipment, it's going to have a nautical theme and a farmers market theme to it, we're going to have two different jungle gyms for different ages, and it will also be ADA accessible," said Eckblad.
As of now, Eckblad says the hope is the beach will reopen by the end of July, and the new playground could be ready in a few weeks -- potentially by the end of June.
