Red Cross: Water & Fire Safety

Just in time for warmer weather and as local pools start to open, we're diving into water safety. A national Red Cross survey found nearly all parents expect their children to participate in water activities this summer, but 61% don't believe their kids have all five basic swimming skills.

CBS 58's Jessica Tighe talks with an aquatics specialist about the five skills children and adults need to know to stay safe in and around water.

The Red Cross also has a nationwide campaign underway to reduce the number of fire deaths and injuries by 25% over five years.

Volunteers recently went door-to-door in a couple of Racine neighborhoods to check for working smoke detectors and install smoke detectors in homes without them. A local volunteer explains what they uncovered when they went into an area on the city's south side that has a history of fires.
