Natalie's Everyday Heroes: Camp Caring shows kids how to lend a hand
WAUWATOSA, Wis. (CBS 58) -- Summer is here, which leaves kids with a lot of free time on their hands.
The Wauwatosa Recreation Department wants kids to put some of that time to good use by volunteering. So, they created Camp Caring.
It's a fun way for kids to learn about giving back.
"Where you putting jeans?" asked Layne Guardiola.
Guardiola doesn't waste any time getting to work.
"Gotta lead by example," he said with a smile.
He's one of three counselors with Camp Caring.
"Everyone's really on task and everybody's doing what they need to be doing," he said.
He's overseeing a group of middle schoolers, getting the opportunity to volunteer. And some are doing it for the very first time.
"We need kids to learn early that they should give back to their community," Guardiola explained.
On this day, the campers are helping Lona Long Velasco at the Robyn's Nest.
"They really are putting their loving touches on everything, because they know everything they touch is going to touch someone in a vulnerable situation," she said.
The Robyn's Nest is a program operated through Children's Wisconsin. It's making sure kids in foster care have clothing and basic necessities they need.
"I think it's really cool to help little kids, and older ones, too, in need," said camper Juhi Sharma.
Sharma is one of 10 campers helping to sort, organize and beautify the space.
"We've been like trying to put them in the right sections, so it'll look nice for the people who come," she said.
Kristin Pelot is Camp Caring's coordinator.
"It's a great introduction," Pelot said. "It's that good age where they can do two hours and it's comfortable for them."
Camp Caring is in its fourth year.
"Wow! That's a big project to take on," Long Velasco said to some campers organizing a section of prom dresses.
And in a short amount of time, the campers could see the difference they made.
"That's so pretty," Long Velasco exclaimed.
Showing a new generation that caring can be fun.
"Even if it's a one-day thing, even if it's only two hours, anything helps," Guardiola said.
The campers with Camp Caring will be volunteering with the Milwaukee Diaper Mission in August. Pelot says there are a few spaces still open. And again, you can find out more through the Wauwatosa Recreation Department.
