'Really active first 8 months': Wisconsin now at 47 tornadoes in 2026

SUSSEX, Wis. (CBS 58) — Storms that hit southeastern Wisconsin Tuesday night left behind significant tree damage throughout Sussex.

"I was in shock, just kind of walking around assessing the damage and then realizing how incredibly lucky we were that it missed our house," Sussex resident Katie Nitzsche said.

The part of Sussex hit Tuesday is just 2 miles away from where an EF-2 tornado touched down in April.

"We've lived here about 18 years. I'd say we spent more time in the basement this year than we have in the entire time that we have lived here," Nitzsche said.

Chris Vagasky, manager of Wisconet, said there have been 47 tornadoes in Wisconsin so far this year.

"It's been a really active first eight months of 2026. Here we are now, the second-most active tornado year on record in Wisconsin," Vagasky said.

While Wisconsin has experienced an active tornado pattern so far in 2026, Vagasky said there is no way to know what 2027 will bring.

"Do all of those ingredients come together at the right time, at the right place? And we've seen that happen a lot here this year, but that doesn't mean that'll happen like that next year," Vagasky said.
