MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Throughout the country, families are picking up books for Read Across America Week.
Our Montse Ricossa joined in on the celebrations at Penfield Children's Center as one of the guest readers.
Read Across America started nearly 30 years ago and it coincides with Dr. Seuss' birthday.
The program focuses on motivating children and teenagers to engage in reading, providing long-term benefits throughout life.
"As you grow, that literacy is always going to be with you," said Arious Walton, Head Start teacher. "Learning and literacy, no matter what, elementary to college, one thing you're going to get is that literacy and learning.
According to a report from the National Early Literacy Panel, 74% of children who perform poorly in reading by third grade continue to struggle in high school.
Organizers encourage everyone to pick up a book today and continue to emphasize reading.
