MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- The city of Milwaukee's Zoning, Neighborhoods and Development Committee met Tuesday to discuss a slew of issues, including potential regulations on short-term rentals on platforms like Airbnb and HomeAway.
Alderwoman Milele Coggs introduced the topic for discussion, and she says the city has seen a rise in available short-term rentals.
She says it also affects housing values, with properties being flipped for an Airbnb selling for higher than a normal home.
Now, the city is looking for ways to regulate the industry.
"Local municipalities continue to retain a fair amount of power to regulate very, very short-term stays and require licensing, and those are all the things we're going to work hand-in-hand with this team and solicit input from the city attorney's office as we respond to this directing resolution."
The committee says they estimate there are about 1,000 Airbnbs booked every year in Milwaukee.
They now plan to look at other cities across the nation to see how they regulate short-term rentals.
