MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) – Last week, Milwaukee County Circuit Court Judge Hannah Dugan was found guilty of obstructing federal agents while they tried to make an arrest inside her courtroom in April. One week after the verdict, the sketch artist who brought the trial to life is reflecting on the important job opportunity for her career.

Adela Tesnow is a 23-year-old recent graduate of the Milwaukee Institute of Art. She says she saw an ad for a sketch artist and applied for the job to assist local TV stations in Milwaukee but had no idea the national attention this case was going to receive.

“I just kind of jumped into it,” Tesnow said. “I didn’t realize how important it was, but I realized when I was watching the trial just how important it was.”

With her colored pencils and sketchbook, she created images documenting each day of the jury trial as no cameras were allowed inside. Tesnow said she had to work very quickly.

“You have to be really fast, being able to draw a sketch in under 3 minutes, it’s just one of those things you have to be able to do,” Tesnow said.

With a case that had national political and judicial implications, Tesnow said she’s reflecting on the importance of her role and is grateful for the opportunity.

“Without photography and without cameras, I am the photographer in the courtroom. Looking back on all those sketches I made, it was really the only glimpse into the courtroom. I feel honored I was able to do it, Tesnow said. “It was incredible.”

Tesnow says she has a goal of earning another degree in the arts. You can find a link to Tesnow’s work here.
