Officials: Man attacked woman with hatchet in Fond du Lac because she broke up with him

FOND DU LAC, Wis. (CBS 58) -- A 34-year-old Ripon man is accused of attacking a woman with an axe in Fond du Lac, leaving her with serious injuries.
The incident happened Sunday, June 22.
According to a criminal complaint, a 911 call came in from a woman reporting she had been attacked with an axe and was bleeding.
Officers arrived at the scene and located a 38-year-old woman with multiple lacerations to her arms, legs, back and head.
The alleged suspect fled the scene.
The complaint says, the victim suffered two broken arms and several skull fractures.
The victim, according to the complaint, told investigators she had been in a relationship with the suspect -- identified as Hayden Daffinson -- for several months and had been living together for the last month.
The complaint says, the victim decided to end their relationship about a week prior to the attack.
The victim told investigators, according to the complaint, she allowed Daffinson to retrieve his property from the residence on June 22 and that's when the attack occurred.
Daffinson is accused of attacking the victim with a hatchet he had bought from a Dollar General store before sexually assaulting her.
The criminal complaint says, Daffinson struck the victim with the hatchet approximately 30 times.
The victim, according to the complaint, stated, "the only reason he didn't kill me was because I said I wasn't gonna.... that I'd tell you guys I fell down the stairs or something."
The victim felt like the assault took place for approximately 20 minutes, the complaint says.
According to investigators, the woman advised Daffinson was mad at her because she broke the relationship off but did not think he would do something like this to her.
Daffinson has been charged with the following:
- Attempted first-degree intentional homicide, use of a dangerous weapon
- First-degree sexual assault, use of a dangerous weapon
- Mayhem, use of a dangerous weapon (two counts)
- First-degree reckless injury, use of a dangerous weapon
- Aggravated battery, use of a dangerous weapon
- Felony intimidation of a victim
- False imprisonment
Daffinson was in court Wednesday, June 25 where a judge set bond at $5 million.
He's due back in court for a preliminary hearing on July 31.
