MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- The US Food and Drug Administration recently approved an over-the-counter version of the opioid overdose antidote Narcan, aiming to increase access for those in need.
However, in an interview with Vivent Health Vice President and Chief Advocacy Officer Bill Keeton on Wednesday, April 12, he expressed concerns to CBS 58 that the price could still be a barrier for the underserved in Milwaukee.
Vivent Health serves a community with a large number of uninsured individuals, those living below the federal poverty level and/or on Medicaid.
Keeton discussed the potential impact of over-the-counter Narcan availability in Milwaukee, noting that Vivent Health offers free Narcan to its patients and provides Narcan training.
According to the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention, 107,735 overdose deaths from drug poisonings occurred between August 2021 and August 2022, with roughly 66% involving synthetic opioids like fentanyl. In 2021, Vivent Health distributed 16,263 doses of Narcan in Milwaukee, reportedly saving 367 lives and training 1,390 residents on its usage.
