Milwaukee, Racine lift bridges to receive state funding for maintenance

CBS 58

MADISON, Wis. (CBS 58) -- Milwaukee will receive nearly $975,000 and Racine will receive about $663,000 as part of more than $2.3 million in state funding announced by Gov. Tony Evers and the Wisconsin Department of Transportation on Thursday, July 9 as an attempt to help maintain lift bridges across five Wisconsin cities.

In Milwaukee, the funding covers four bridges: Kinnickinnic Avenue, Broadway Street, Wells Street and State Street.

Racine's Main Street and State Street bridges will also receive funding.

Green Bay and Manitowoc are also receiving payments through the program, along with the city of Menasha.

The funding comes through WisDOT's Lift Bridge Aids program, which reimburses cities for costs tied to maintaining and operating lift bridges connected to the state highway system.

"Our coastal infrastructure and bridges play a critical role in keeping our economy and our state strong," Evers said in a Thursday statement.

The 2025-27 state budget added $265,900 annually to the program and expanded eligibility to include Menasha's Racine Street lift bridge.
