MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- The Milwaukee Public Museum took another step toward building its future home. Monday, May 1, demolition crews began tearing down building number two of three, making way for the museum's new home.

The building of the new museum is said to be the largest cultural project in the history of Wisconsin.

"It’s a multi-year endeavor and about a $240 million project, and really excited to see some more activity on the site here," said Katie Sanders, chief planning officer with the Milwaukee Public Museum.

The museum will be housed in the Haymarket neighborhood. It will cover 200,000 square feet, blocks away from Deer District, standing at five stories.

Leaders with the museum said the location was picked to make it convenient for everyone to visit.

"We are accessible to communities on the north and south side right here off 6th Street, very easily accessible to the interstate right here, so our visitors from across the state and even outside of Wisconsin have an easy visit," said Sanders.

The new museum is scheduled to open in 2026.
